Barry L. Young, 69, of Punxsutawney, passed away on Thursday, January 16, 2025 at the Punxsutawney Area Hospital.
He was born in Punxsutawney, May 10, 1955, to John L. and Audrey (Howard) Young in Punxsutawney.
Barry was a 1973 graduate of the Punxsutawney Area High School and Slippery Rock University in 1977. He was a special education teacher with the Punxsutawney Area School District for 35 years before his retirement in 2012. While working with the school district, he also was a long-time wrestling, track and football coach for both Junior High and Varsity. Mr. Young was well known by his colleagues, students and athletes for his never-ending sense of humor and wit. He also had a very kind and giving heart and made sure no student was ever left out. Barry was an avid sports enthusiast. He enjoyed talking to anyone about sports, watching the Pittsburgh Steelers and Penn State Wrestling, vacationing and fishing at the beach, traveling out west and recently took a trip to Italy.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Karen A. (Notaro) Young, Punxsutawney, two sons, Eric Young, (Amoreena) OH, Craig A. Young, (Christina), Punxsutawney, two grandchildren, Dade Davenport and Adria Young, his mother, Audrey Young, Punxsutawney, four brothers and a sister, David Young (Rosemary), Punxsutawney, Terry Young, (Marcia), Erie, Becky Riggle (Leasure), Brookville, Ron Young, Erie, Joe Young, Marchand, father-in-law Joseph Notaro, Port Vue, brothers-in-law Randy Henry, Anita, and Jeff Notaro (Tracey), South Park. and numerous nieces and nephews
He was preceded in death by his father, and a sister Alma Henry and mother-in-law Anna Mae Notaro.
Friends will be received on Sunday January 19, 2025 from 1:00 – 5:00 PM at the McCabe Funeral Home, Inc., 114 Maple Ave., Punxsutawney, PA 15767. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday January 20, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Saint Cosmas and Damian Catholic Church, 616 West Mahoning St., Punxsutawney, PA 15767 with MSGR Joseph Riccardo, Celebrant.
Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery, Punxsutawney.
