Charles "Charlie" Elvin Weiss

Charles “Charlie” Elvin Weiss, 78, of Derry, was called to the Lord on Wednesday, July 31, 2019. He was born August 5, 1940, in Blue Knob, PA, a son of Alfred A. and Mary (Kunsman) Weiss.  Charlie was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army.  He was also a longtime member of the Derry Volunteer Fire Department, where he drove fire engines and assisted those in need for 50 years.  Charlie was one of the friendliest people that God ever created.  He always had a pleasant greeting for friends and strangers alike.  Those of us who knew him loved his hardy, contagious laugh that could be heard blocks away.  Charlie loved to go for long drives, often with his loving wife, Patsy, in tow.  It was a match made in heaven since she didn’t know how to drive.  He also loved trains, thus making Derry a wonderful place for Charlie to spend his life.  It was common for him to buy a take-out dinner, park his car near the train tracks, and watch the trains go by on summer evenings.  Most importantly, at 31 years of age, Charlie took on a wife and three children, ages 9, 7, and 6.  No father could have done a better job of providing love and financial security and never once complaining about the sacrifices he made.  Charlie was preceded in death by his loving wife of 34 years, Patsy Kurtz Weiss; grandson Joshua Mulheren; brothers Fredrick Weiss, Arthur Weiss, Irvin Weiss; and sister Mary Esther Short. Charlie will be lovingly remembered by his children, Craig Miron and his long-time partner Angela Foglia, of Monroeville; Jennifer Giannini and her long-time partner Tony Grkman, of Latrobe; and Christine Bowser and her husband, Dan, of Sipesville.  Charlie will also be fondly remembered by grandchildren, Lyndsay and Allie Miron, Jordan Giannini, and Micaiah and Christian Ostrander.  Charlie is also survived by Anthony and Willy Grkman who he loved like his own grandchildren.  Charlie will also be missed by his loving nephew, Roger Weiss; brother and sisters-in-law, Patrick and Ruth Kurtz, of Fairport, N.Y., and Loretta Kurtz, of Ligonier; special friends Christine Shamey Miron, Rose Battaglia and Josephine Battaglia; and many other friends, nieces and nephews.  Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the MCCABE FUNERAL HOME, 300 W. Third Ave., Derry.  A service by the Derry Volunteer Fire Department will be conducted on Sunday at 7:00 p.m.  Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, preceded at 10:30 by the Latrobe – Derry Veterans Honor Guard.  The pastor, the Rev.
