Elizabeth J. “Betty” Barilar (née Nase), 91, of Punxsutawney, passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2022 at Penn Highlands Jefferson Manor in Brookville.
Betty was born on July 30, 1931 to Louis and Elizabeth Esther (Cummings) Nase in Walston. She attended Punxsutawney Area High School, where she was a cheerleader and met her husband Jim. She started her career working for Clearfield Aviation Institute. She then worked at Peterson Tire Service and Sylvania Electric Corp before spending the majority of her working career with Jefferson Wholesale Grocery.
After retirement, Betty maintained a busy schedule in service to her community. She frequently visited area nursing homes and provided people with rides to church, shopping, or appointments. Betty was a member of Saints Cosmas and Damian Catholic Church. A notorious early-riser, Betty started each day by attending daily Mass and praying the rosary. She also enjoyed tending to her flower and vegetable gardens around her home. We will fondly remember Betty’s generous spirit and exuberant personality. She was always willing to lend a hand to a friend or neighbor in need and brought an infectious energy with her wherever she went.
She is survived by her son, James M. Barilar and wife Anne, of Woodbury, MN; two grandchildren, Denise Barilar, New York City, NY, and Renae Fiecas and husband Mark, Woodbury, MN; her great-grandson, Antonio James Fiecas; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James S. Barilar, and by her eight brothers and sisters, Geraldine Metz, Richard Nase, Roseann Martino, Mary Margaret Westphal, James Nase, William Nase, Paul Nase, and Robert Nase.
The family would like to thank the staff at Penn Highlands Jefferson Manor for the superior care that was given to Betty.
