Esther Jane Carrier, 92 of Punxsutawney, passed away Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at Punxsutawney Area Hospital. Esther Jane was born June 22, 1925 in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Gerald and Mabel Carrier. She graduated from Punxsutawney Area High School in 1942 and was the second highest in her class. In August of 1942 she joined the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church. She was a faithful Christian and enjoyed discussing the history of the church. Through the years she remained interested in her church family and loved listening to the old hymns. She kept up with current events by reading and always encouraged people to vote. After graduation she attended Bob Jones University in Greenville, S. Carolina and then Geneva College where she earned her BA Degree as well as a degree in Library Science from Carnegie Tech. While working at Penn State University, she earned her Masters Degree and later went on to earn a Doctorate Degree in Library Science from the University of Michigan. For many years Esther Jane was Head Librarian at Houghton College in New York State. She also worked in the library at Lock Haven University and from there came home to Punxsutawney where she worked with Community Action for a few years until her health began to fail. She will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by one brother; Gerald Carrier and wife Pat of Corning, NY., one sister; Ann Fehl of Punxsutawney, three nieces; Beth Bergstrom and husband Chris, Sally Gaul, Katheryn Carrier and one nephew; Thomas Carrier. Friends will be received from 12-1 pm Saturday, March 10, 2018 at the McCabe Funeral Home in Punxsutawney where a funeral service will be held at 1 pm with Pastor Don Jones officiating. Private interment will follow at Carrier/Vandervort Cemetery in Summerville. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Punxsutawney Alliance Church or Mahaffey Camp.
