It is with heavy hearts and an incredible sense of loss that we say goodbye to Gavin M. Schurr, 16, of Punxsutawney, who passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2024.
Born on November 4, 2007, in Punxsutawney, Gavin was currently in the 11th grade at Punxsutawney Area High School. Gavin had a passion for sports. Soccer was his go-to game, but he also enjoyed shooting hoops with his dad. His loved the Milwaukee Bucks during the NBA season but Michael Jordan was his ultimate basketball legend. He was also a fan of the New England Patriots when it came to football, watching sports and cheering on his teams with friends and family were some of his favorite times.
Gavin was not just about sports, though. He was an avid video game player, particularly enjoying Fortnite with his friends but also looked forward to Friday nights spent gaming with his dad. Gavin enjoyed listening to music and he loved the relaxing sounds of the ocean, which reminded him of family trips to the Outer Banks in North Carolina and led him to want to live at the beach someday.
Family time was precious to Gavin. His relationship with his sister, Lyndsey, “Pip-Squeek”, was a special one filled with playful teasing—he would often call her “annoying,” but deep down, his affection was evident. He also enjoyed driving his mom to DuBois and making her guess the songs he would play.
Gavin enjoyed snacking and mastered the microwave and air fryer skills necessary to whip up his favorite late-night snacks like taquitos or microwave popcorn. Seafood, chocolate and sweets - especially Peppermint Pattys, hot dogs, and the ever-reliable cold pizza were among his favorite treats.
Gavin's family includes his parents Michael D. and Melissa M. (Getty) Schurr. his sister, Lyndsey R. Schurr, along with his paternal grandparents, Dave and Judy Schurr from Marion Center, and his maternal grandparents, Jim and Mary Getty of North East, PA, all holding onto the cherished memories they created together. He also leaves behind a wonderful circle of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who will carry his spirit with them always. Gavin will be especially missed by his Uncle Jimmy Getty (Jen) of Colorado, along with his beloved cousins Carter and Preston. His beloved dog Max, and his tortoise, Thunder will also miss their special friend.
Friends will be received to celebrate Gavin’s life at McCabe Funeral Home, Inc. 114 Maple Avenue in Punxsutawney on Sunday, August 25, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. We invite everyone who knew Gavin to come together and share stories, laughter, and tears as we honor this remarkable young man whose radiant spirit, playful nature and boundless love touched so many.
