Geary J. Smith

Geary J. Smith passed away on Sunday, November 10, 2024, at Penn Highlands, DuBois Hospital. 

He was born December 13, 1946, to Bruce and Dorothy (Neil) Smith in Punxsutawney.

Geary was a graduate of the Punxsutawney Area High School. After graduating he enlisted in the United States Army, serving in the Vietnam War. Geary then attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania where he received his undergraduate degree, and his master’s degree. Geary attended the Grace United Methodist Church. He was an active member of the Punxsutawney VFW Post 2076, John W. Jenks Masonic Lodge #534. Geary enjoyed many things; However, his grandchildren were his pride and joy. He enjoyed hunting, building guns, visiting with his friends at the VFW, and his friends at the Masonic Lodge. 

He is survived by two grandchildren, Colton and Alison Smith, Punxsutawney, a daughter; Antoinette E. Thomassy, Morrisdale; a son, Matthew J. Smith (Lauren), Hamilton; Three brothers, Charles Smith (Reiko), Donald Smith, Paul Smith (Vivian), and a sister Susan Humble (Ron), all of Punxsutawney, and numerous nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Eileen (Schrock) Smith in 2022, two brothers, Ronald and Bruce Smith and a sister Nancy Evans. 

Family and friends will be received on Wednesday from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and again on Thursday from 10:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM at McCabe Funeral Home, Inc., 114 Maple Ave., Punxsutawney, PA, 15767, with Pastor Ed Bach officiating. Military honors will follow, by the Punxsutawney VFW Lodge #2076 and the Jefferson County Veteran’s Honor Guard.
