James P. Mellon

James Patrick Mellon, 83, of Cloe, passed away on Tuesday, February 4, 2025 at the Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

Jim was born September 23, 1941 to James P. and Muriel (Bukowski) Mellon, in Brooklyn, New York.

Jim was a peacetime veteran serving with the United States Marine Corps. After the military, Jim became a New York City police officer for 10 years before moving to Punxsutawney. He then worked in the coal mines before opening the original D&J’s Ice Cream in Cloe. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, boating, camping and cruising on his Honda. 

He is survived by his wife Robin (Ransom) Mellon, Cloe, daughters Carole Popp (Michael), Barbara Lombardi (Gerard), sons Richard Mellon (Laurie), James Mellon (Dorothy), NJ, daughter Sandra Taylor (Tim), FL, step-daughter, Ashley Goss (Adam), Rossiter, a step-son, Alex Sommers, Rossiter, two brothers-in-law, Michael Ransom, Donald Strawcutter (Denise), all of Punxsutawney, five sisters-in-law Wanda Chorrushi (Jim), Tracy Evans (Mark), Melissa Conwell (Monte), Caroline Bousum (Scott), and Linda Strunk, all of Kokomo, IN, twelve grandchildren, Nicole, Richie, Nicolette, Tiffany, Dana, James, Jessica, Joseph, Nicholas, Andrew, Amy and Louis, eight great grandchildren, Cassidy, Quinn, Joseph, Hudson, Benjamin, Maddie, Julianna, and Michael, and numerous nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Helen Mellon, his second wife Donna (Manners) Mellon in 2010, and a step-son Adam Sommers. 

Friends will be received on Sunday from 1:00 PM until the time of service at 4:00 PM at the McCabe Funeral Home, Inc, 114 Maple Ave., Punxsutawney, PA 15767.

Interment will take place at Oaklawn Cemetery, Cloe.
