Janet L. Niel

Janet Lee Niel, 92, of Indiana, passed away Monday, Dec. 25, 2023 at Indiana Regional Medical Center. 

She was born August 19, 1931 in Punxsutawney to the late Frank and Leitha (Cochran) Niel. She was a 1949 graduate of Dayton High School. 

Janet was dedicated to her work; first working at the Sports Wear Factory in Punxsutawney and then spending the rest of her career as a quality control supervisor at the Seasonal/Thermal Guard window factory splitting her time between the Punxsutawney and Indiana factories. She really valued her work and placed a high priority on doing a good job. 

She loved the outdoors and enjoyed nature and watching the birds and deer in her backyard. She regularly helped take care of stray animals in her neighborhood. She enjoyed hunting but her true passion was fishing on the local streams. She loved going to Yellow Creek Park and Blue Spruce and taking a drive through the country to take in the fresh air. She kept up with current events by watching the news and enjoyed a good political discussion.

She enjoyed giving back to the community. Janet volunteered at the Indiana Salvation Army for over 20 years; helping with the winter coat program, helping provide meals to those in need, and helping get people the services they needed. After the Flight 93 crash in Somerset in 2001 she volunteered for several weeks helping first responders. 

Janet was preceded in death by her parents, her two sisters; Natalie Ann (Niel) Stiteler and Mildred “Mim” (Niel) Stiteler. She is survived by her brother John F. “Buck” Niel of Smicksburg. 

Services are private.  McCabe Funeral Home, Inc. has been entrusted with the arrangements.
