Leonard Merle (Len) Meneely, 65, of Sagamore, PA, died suddenly at home on Saturday, October, 1, 2016. He was born in Punxsutawney, PA on April 24, 1951 to Clair Leonard Meneely and Doris Jane (Hoover) Meneely.
On July 28, 1973 Len married Suzanne (Pape) Meneely and together they were married 43 years.
Len graduated from Punxsutawney High School class of 1969 and Penn State University in 1973 with a B.S. Degree in Rehabilitation Education. Throughout his career he was a strong advocate for improving the lives of individuals with disabilities. He retired in 2015 from the Progressive Workshop of Armstrong County after nearly 37 years as CEO. During his tenure, he worked closely with county and government officials in establishing the Armstrong Recycling Center as well as many other programs.
He was a member of the Kittanning Rotary Club and attained the designation of being a Paul Harris Fellow. He served on the boards of Armstrong-Indiana Drug & Alcohol Commission and SPARC. He was a founding trustee of PARF Workers Comp Insurance Dividend Trust.
One of Lens many passions was spending time outdoors with his family. He was an Eagle Scout, avid hunter and trapper and was a member of the National Trappers Association and Life Member of the NRA. He was currently the Secretary/Treasurer of Stone Creek Hunting and Fishing Club, Inc. He loved hunting with his sons, grandchildren, cousins and friends and enjoyed many trips to Montana hunting deer and Elk. He also enjoyed ice fishing in Montana with his son and grandson.
He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Punxsutawney where he served as head usher and Co-Chairman of the Trustees Committee.
Len is survived by his loving wife, Suzanne, and their children Scott Leonard (Dina Sainato) Meneely of Malta, Montana; Rebecca Suzanne (Jason) Mibroda of Canonsburg; and Michael Robert (Jana Bowser) Meneely of Templeton. He was adored by his 5 grandchildren Ryan Scott, Maria Rose, Declan Clair, Becca Ann and Ella Marie. He also leaves his sisters Ellen Meneely and Carol (Irvin) Mottern, of Punxsutawney and Diane (Ross) Miller, of Annville and brothers-in-law John A. Pape, Jr. of Mahaffey and Joseph (Rosy) Pape, of West Virginia along with nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife’s parents, John and Carolyn Pape. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by William and Alma (Leckburg) Meneely and Merle and Edna (Domb) Hoover.
Friends will be received on Tuesday, October 4 at McCabe Funeral Home, 114 Maple Avenue in Punxsutawney from 2-4 and 6-8. Additional viewing will be held from 9:30-10:30am Wednesday October 5 at the funeral home with a funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Punxsutawney with Pastor Paul Ritchey and Rev. A. David Meneely officiating. Burial will take place at Round Top Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Punxsutawney First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or to the Progressive Workshop of Armstrong County Endowment Fund.
