Nelda E. Shields

Nelda (English) Shields, 96, of Juneau, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024. 

She was born June 13, 1927 in Rossiter, PA to Eli and Mary (Tyler) English.

On June 21, 1948 she married George (Dick) Shields, who preceded her in death in May 1999. 

Through the years, Nelda, along with her husband, her sister & brother-in-law (Joyce & Bill Dunmire) were the original Gospel Group, The Harmony Four, that spread the word of God throughout Western Pennsylvania. She was employed at Loree Footwear, Steffy’s Market and White’s House of Kitchens. 

Nelda is survived by her sons, D.A. Schaffron (Carol), Juneau PA andClarence Shields, Gaston, IN, grandchildren, Shawn (Kim) Schaffron, Rossiter, PA, Toni Schaffron, Indiana, PA and Dennis Shields, Gaston, IN, great grandchildren, Aaron and Taylor Shields, brother-in-law, William Dunmire, Juneau PA and sister-in-law Marge English, Erie PA along with numerous nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceeded in death by her son Rodger Shields and daughter-in-law Claudette Shields as well as all thirteen of her siblings: sisters, Annabelle (Arch) Whidden, Belle Glade, FL, Audrey (Lester) Gaston, Rossiter, PA, Infant Amy English, Caldonia, Hazel (Art) Tyger, Marion Center, PA, Lola (Walt) Gaston, Indiana, PA, Ida (Lloyd) Lasley, Gaston, IN, Jane (Walter) Bishop, Rossiter, PA, Joyce Dunmire, Juneau PA and  Beverly (Joe) Weaver, Blairsville, PA and brothers, Clyde English, Polk PA, Sam (Sue) English, Salamanca, NY, and Eli English, Erie, PA, a brother-in-law Harold Osborne, Gaston, IN, and sister-in-laws Flo Nelson, Rachel (Marty) Yount, and Elizabeth (George) Haverilla, Indiana, PA.  

Friends will be received at the McCabe Funeral Home Inc., 114 Maple Ave., Punxsutawney, PA 15767, from 1:00 PM until the time of service at 3:00 PM on Friday, with Pastor Michael Osborne officiating.

Interment will take place at Union Hill Cemetery in Rossiter.

In lieu of Flowers, contributions can be made in Nelda’s Memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or to the charity of the donor's choice.
