Norma Jane (Means) Harl

Norma Jane Harl, 95 of Punxsutawney, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday August 17, 2023 at the Punxsutawney Area Hospital with her family by her side.

She was born August 31, 1927, to Walter and Mary (McClelland) Means in Punxsutawney.

Jane attended Jenks Hill Elementary school and graduated from the Punxsutawney Area High School in 1945. She married her high school sweetheart Frank Harl Jr., November 10, 1946. They enjoyed 73 years of marriage before his passing October 15, 2020. Jane with her husband owned Harl’s Shoe Store for 34 years. Jane was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Punxsutawney for over 70 years. She loved giving hugs to everyone she would encounter at church, passing the love of Jesus from her heart. Jane served on various committees with the church. When a missionary would visit, Jane was always willing to extend an invitation to stay with her and her family.  She helped with Good News Club, through Child Evangelism, served as treasurer for the Salvation Army and volunteered at the Salvation Army store until it closed. She was a member and treasurer of the Christian Women’s Club, helped start the Aglow Fellowship, and served as its local and district treasurer. She was a volunteer for the Jefferson County Red Cross. In 1997, she was recognized as volunteer of the year for the Jefferson County Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Jane enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles, sewing, baking, and cooking. Most of all Jane loved spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by Sandra Winger and husband Gary, Spring Church; Linda Billings, St. Regis Falls, NY; Barbara Dunlap, Punxsutawney; Flo Bunnell and husband Ralph, Punxsutawney; Frank Harl III and wife Kathy, Maineville, OH; Kathy Barnett and Jake, Johnstown; thirteen grandchildren, 28 ½ great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Frank Harl Jr., a daughter Mary Bea Harl, an infant granddaughter Molly and an infant great granddaughter Amber, brothers, Frank and W. Don Means, and sisters, Sara Marie Curry, Marjorie Ronko and Georgia Lou Quashnock and two son in laws; Bob Billings and Jim Dunlap.

Friends will be received Sunday, from 3:00 PM until the time of service at 4:00 PM with Rev. Steve Gruver officiating at the Journey Church (formerly First United Methodist Church) 301 West Mahoning Street, Punxsutawney, PA 15767. Interment will take place at Lakelawn Memorial Park, Reynoldsville, PA
