Roscoe C. "Jake" Smathers

Roscoe C. "Jake" Smathers Jr., 87, of Mahaffey, passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2022 at his home with his wife Nina and his family by his side.

He was born April 25, 1935 to Roscoe C. Sr. and Virginia (Reitz) Smathers in Ringgold Township, Jefferson County.

Jake was the owner and operator of the Smathers Lumber Company for 25 years.  He was also employed as a gas well supervisor, a position from which he retired 25 years ago.  Jake was also known for being a well accomplished carpenter, welder and gardener.  In his spare time, he loved hunting and fishing.  He was respected for his ability to fix anything.

Jake was a husband, Father, Grandpa, Great-Grandpa, Friend, Brother and God-Loving person.  Everyone who knew him will miss him dearly.  He was a member of the Mt. Carmel Church in Mahaffey

He is survived by his wife Nina (Yount) Smathers, of 67 years, whom he married June 4, 1955, three children, Beverly Hook and husband Bill, Pittsburgh, Joseph Smathers and wife Suzanne, Mahaffey, Patricia Conrad and husband Keith, Pittsburgh, six grandchildren, Jacob Smathers, Melissa Wical, Stephanie Hook, Steven Hook, Jocelyn Russo, Joel Conrad, six great grandchildren, Sawyer and Lennon Smathers, Charlie and Connor Hook, Penelope Burford, Eleanor Russo, two brothers, David Smathers and wife Debbie, WI, Edward Smathers and wife Janette, CA, three sisters, Elaine Raybuck and husband Lorraine, Sprankle Mills, Kathy Gensure and husband George, Pittsburgh, Ginny Powell and husband Roger, AZ, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Doris Marie Smathers and Flora Bell "Jo" Parente

Friends will be received on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Waldron Funeral Home, 831 Market Street, Mahaffey, PA 15757. Friends will also be received on Monday from 10:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM at Mount Carmel Church, 3023 Clover Run Road, Mahaffey, PA 15757.

Interment will take place at Mount Carmel Cemetery., Mahaffey.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Mount Carmel Church or Mount Carmel Cemetery, 3023 Clover Run Road, Mahaffey, PA 15757
