Velma Belle (Rodgers) Burkett

Velma Belle Burkett, 89, of Punxsutawney, passed away Thursday, April 13, 2023 at Penn Highlands Jefferson Manor in Brookville.

She was born October 19, 1933 to William B. and Blanche (Means) Rodgers in Punxsutawney.

Velma was a homemaker her entire life.  Velma always put others first and led a life of service to her church and her community.  As an active member of the First Church of God, she served as a Sunday School teacher for thirty years as well as being a member of The Women of the Church of God and The Owl’s.  Velma was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at Oliver Township Fire Hall and also served thirty years on the election board in Oliver Township.

She is survived by three sons; Dennis R. Burkett (Patricia K.) of Derby, KS, Durwin Burkett of Brookville, and Wayne A. Burkett (Linda) of Carlisle, three grandchildren, six great grandchildren, a sister, Betty Reed (Paul) of Anita, two brothers, David Rogers (Denise) of Big Run, and Robert Rogers of Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Lorraine W. Burkett on February 14, 1996, and two brothers, William Samuel and James Alvin Rogers.

Friends will be received on Monday from 5-7 PM at the McCabe Funeral Home Inc., 114 Maple Ave., Punxsutawney, PA 15767. Friends will also be received on Tuesday from 10:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM at the First Church of God, 23 Skyview Dr., Punxsutawney, PA 15767.

Interment will take place at Markton Cemetery in Punxsutawney.
