Wilma ‘Nicky’ (Menear) Curry, aged 91, passed away peacefully at the DuBois Nursing Home on Friday, December 9.
Born June 3, 1925 to Chauncey and Alice (Neal) Menear in McGees Mills, Mrs. Curry was a graduate of Mahaffey High School, and relocated to Mahaffey after her marriage to Ray S. Curry of LaJose in October of 1946.
Her only son, John Ray, was born in Mahaffey on April 30, 1953.
A lifelong member of the Mahaffey United Methodist Church, Mrs. Curry was involved in a variety of committees including the KumJoinUs, Ladies Auxiliary and several Bazzars.
Along with her parents and sisters, Mrs. Curry handled daily operations at the family-run Menear’s Diner in Mahaffey, as well as being a decorated homemaker and hostess to many events.
Known as Duck to her grandchildren, she enjoyed spending time with them at the Curwensville Public Library, the McGees Mills Covered Bridge and attending many school sporting events and plays.
Mrs. Curry’s passions in life were crafting, baking, entertaining and reading. She always led an active life, from playing basketball on the Mahaffey High School Women’s Team to her daily walks throughout Mahaffey every morning with her sister-in-law Harriet.
In her later years, Mrs. Curry’s love of literature was kept alive by her close friend, Naomi, who would call her every evening at 6 to read to her for an hour.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and son. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Debra (Bennett) Curry of Mahaffey and two grandchildren – Justin Ray, of Pittsburgh and Joshua Earl and his wife, Cheri (Rudolph) of Mahaffey. She is also survived by two sisters, Regina (June) Farmery of Glen Campbell and Carol (Jean) Hook of Denver, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Friends and family will be received Monday, December 12 from 10am to 2pm at the Waldron Funeral Home, Market Street, Mahaffey. Funeral services will immediately follow at 2pm and a private interment will be held at the LaJose Cemetery, with Rev. John White officiating.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Mahaffey United Methodist Church, Curwensville Public Library, or Penn Highlands DuBois Home Health Hospice.
